Pregnancy Cravings, Double the Trouble

A lot of friends have been wondering what my pregnancy food cravings have been like this time around since I'm carrying twins. I was pretty lucky with Liam - I didn't crave a lot of unusual things, I was just very hungry. Nachos was one of the junk foods I couldn't seem to quench, but I also had a huge craving for apples (which I crave again now), and water-based fruits like watermelon and cantaloupe.

Now that the first trimester is over, and the morning sickness (or all-day sickness as was sometimes the case) has abated, I've definitely entered the period of extreme hunger. This is different kind of pregnancy hunger. This is an all-the-time type of hunger. It's an I could easily eat my own hand if I needed to type of hunger.

For instance: The other night I made a big dinner of my homemade meat loaf (made from a 1940s recipe that I switch up by using ground bison meat), sweet potatoes roasted with sea salt and pepper, green beans, and even brownies. Afterwards I felt sufficiently full and satisfied. Cut to one and a half hours later, and I felt like I hadn't eaten in three days! So I was good, I had myself a nice, crisp Bosc pear. That didn't do jack for me. A little while later I had a few handfuls of unsalted cashews, thinking that nuts were a good way to fill up. They actually made me hungrier. Then I had a glass of chocolate soy milk. When that failed to quench the unbearable hunger, I threw in the towel and went to bed to sleep it off.

And the cravings have started to run to more junk food type stuff, like tater tots and chicken wings. But the main one is Mexican food. I could literally eat Mexican food for every meal and be pretty happy. So this weekend ended up being a sort of craving-indulgence bonanza for me. Friday night we went to our favorite Mexican place, Plaza Guadalajara and it was spectacular. It was everything I wanted, and more. Saturday night I suggested Chinese, which I had also been craving (thanks to having recently re-read some of my favorite Amy Tan books), but the food was less than thrilling. My Moo-Shu-Pork had been heavily filled with cabbage to cut corners. Very little else was in there, in fact, besides the cabbage. Now, I like cabbage, but Moo-Shu-Pork is all about how the savory pork mingles with all the different vegetables in a delightful sauce. They should have renamed it Raw-Cabbage- and-a-Pinch-of-Pork. Sunday I made tater tots to watch the football game, and then we got some dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings, where I had a few chicken wings, and a fajita-type wrap.

Neither were very satisfying, and the tater tots made me feel kind of empty inside. So that being said, my cravings for now seemed to have been quenched by the mere fact that I ate what I wanted and it failed to live up to what I had envisioned in my mind. It's back to the healthy stuff, and indulging in the cravings that I know will satisfy, like good Mexican food. Anybody care to share their wackiest cravings? Or, if you had a snack trick up your sleeve that always tasted good and satisfied? That's what I'm on the hunt for now.

P.S. - As a pregnant woman, I currently can't stand reading celebrity interviews where they talk about how they ate really healthy during their pregnancies but of course, indulged when they wanted. By having a mini powdered doughnut, once. Give. Me. A. Break.

I hated eating when I was pregnant... I found it to be exhausting! I can only imagine that pressure doubled!! Eventually, I found orange and raspberry popcicles to be the most satisfying snack. Though, with my son, I craved Arby's Roast Beef sandwiches, which was odd because I was a vegetarian at the time AND there are no Arby's in NYC. Best of luck finding the perfect pregnancy food!

Carla, I completely understand what you mean. The act of trying to find something that's going to taste good to me, and is also going to be satisfying is exhausting. I think the problem is that I'm just so ridiculously hungry, and nothing seems to fill me up. Too funny about the Arby's sandwiches!

Ok, whoa- I can't even imagine the pregnancy hunger doubled because I had such a love affair with food when I was pregnant. Especially during the second trimester. The first I was sick, and the third I was running out of room to stuff myself.
Ok, so my cravings were anything with vinegar- pickles, (cliche, I know) but also subway sandwiched were da bomb. Veggie sub with extra oil and vinegar and black olives. Mmmm. I also really loved slurpees, which isn't something I ever want when not pregnant. 7-11 was a regular stop for me! Hope you're doing great- I'm so excited for you!

Jenna you are so funny! I've been really enjoying your blog this morning. I almost started crying when I watched the Sandra Lee clip and can sooooooo relate to this post. :)
